What is Contemporary Wedding Photography?

Employing a contemporary wedding photographer for a wedding is a clear sign of a couple wanting to move away from the more traditional ‘pre-determined pose’ photo shoots which have been in the past.

Contemporary wedding photography is focussed on capturing images that tell the story of the day, from the pre-wedding shoot to the first dance. It is a technique, mastered by certain wedding photographers today, which allows more room for creativity and is often far more effective than the traditional style at capturing the actual atmosphere of the occasion.

A contemporary wedding photographer will be constantly on the look out for different opportunities to catch unique and memorable images, whether that involves an image of a couple gazing out across a lake or children running around the wedding venue, a good photographer will have an eye for a stylish snap.

And certain technological advancements within the photographic industry have acted only to enhance their capabilities and artistic ability. Some contemporary wedding photography images might include:

• Pre-wedding shots of the bride and groom getting ready (often separately) for their day. Action images of hair being carefully arranged or make-up applied.

• Indoor photography at a church, temple, or other private venue during the ceremony and reception.

• Outdoor photography, usually in the grounds of the reception venue, or if the area allows, at a park, beach.

• Action shots of the wedding couple and their guests at the reception following the wedding ceremony. Close-up pictures of the first dance, with guests looking on at the happy couple, is one classic contemporary wedding shot.
